Xian ancient city wall located in downtown area with a total length of 13.74 kilometers has four huge city gates – Changle Gate, West Anding Gate, South Yongning Gate and North Anyuan Gate. It was built on the basis of the imperial town of Tang Dynasty. The building aims at defense system construction. The width of the wall is larger than the height. On the wall, the bus driving and troop exercise can be held. The current city wall was built in the early Ming Dynasty (1374-1378), up to today, has a history over 600 years. It is one of the most famous city walls in China and the best preserved ancient city wall of China.
After taking lunch, visit to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda, an enormous building comprising 7 floors and surrounded by beautiful gardens was originally built in AD652 during the reign of Emperor Gaozong (During Tang Dynasty 628-683). It's main function was to collect Buddhist materials taken from India by Xuanzang and to translate the Sanskrit into Chinese. The pagoda is an architectural gem, built with layers of bricks but without any cement. The original structure at 60m high and with only 5 storeys was finished in 652 A.D. Between 701-704 AD, mainly because of structural weakness in the earth-cored pagoda, a new 10-storey pagoda was built. However, between the wars of the coming years and a massive earthquake in 1556, this structure was reduced almost to ruins. As a result, some revisions were made during the Ming Dynasty to produce the 7-storey, 64 meter-tall structure we see today.
Then, we head to the Drum Tower. The Drum Tower, located in the heart of Xian, along with the Bell Tower is a symbol of the city. Built in 1380 during the early Ming Dynasty, it stands towering above the city center and offers incredible view of Xi'an. The Drum Tower got its name from the huge drum located within the building. In contrast to the Bell Tower, where bell was stricken at dawn, drum was beat at sunset to indicate the end of the day.
Finally, we go to Muslim Street. Located in the center of Xian City, the Muslim Street is a fantastic place to wander. All shops and restaurants in the street are operated by Muslims. The stalls flanking the narrow alleys sell almost everything you can imagine. There are even a number of stalls selling parts of aircraft. If you are prepared to bargain you will be amazed at the final prices. A variety of Muslim food and snacks can be tried here, tasty and very cheap, including the locals' favorites, roasted beef, roasted fish, and pancakes. The title "a street for gourmet" is deserved.
