Chaoshan Hill Scenic Area (超山景区, the Surpassing Hill Scenic Area translated literally) traditionally famous as a center of viewing the plum blossoms in the circle of social and cultural elites is located in Tangqi town, Yuhang district, Hangzhou. It is a key cultural site under the provincial protection. It is the additional extension of Tianmu Mountain. The total area of Chaoshan is 5 square kilometers, the main peak with an altitude of 265 meters is named for it surpassing vividly the surrounding Gaoting Hill(皋亭山, Gaoting Pavilion Hill) and Huanghe Hill(黄鹤山, Yellow Crane Hill), then Chaoshan is widely known as the name of this hill.
Boasting the 5,000-Meter Fragrant Snow Sea(十里香雪海), Chaoshan is one of three most famous plum-viewing centers in east China, and it has two ancient plum trees of five top ancient plum trees in China respectively Plum of Tang Dynasty (唐梅) and Plum of Song Dynasty (宋梅). Three characteristics are Ancientness, Wideness and Strangeness. In January, the plums blossomed widely, and the whole area is covered with the white flowers. After a blowing, it seems like a white sea with the falling and flowing snowflakes, which actually are the plum flower petals.
Chaoshan plum has a history more than 1000 years with a variety of kinds like the white plums, red plums, green plums and the white is the main part. During its blooming period, it is the time of viewing period, and many people assemble here to enjoy the beauty of nature, and get the inspiration of creativity. For many years, there are a huge number of cliff inscriptions, themed painting & calligraphy masterpieces and poems left. Today, the main ancient building complex in Chaoshan generally consisting of Daming Hall, Laimei Pavilion, Fuxiang Pavilion, the Tomb and Memorial of Wu Changshuo, a modern master of traditional art of China including calligraphy, painting and seal arts.
Additional Reading – Daming Hall is near to Fuxiang Pavilion with the calligraphic inscription of Sha Menghai, a modern master of calligraphy. The famous five top plum blossoms in China are Chumei(Plum of Chu State), Jinmei (Plum of Jin Dynasty), Suimei (Plum of Sui Dynasty), Tangmei and Songmei .
