The sub-kinds of wintertime plums are the largest. There are more than 30 kinds gathered from Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.

Lingfeng Peak or Spiritual Peak is a famous traditional site to view plums in history of China. The ancient plums and the ancient temples make this site in an atmosphere of peace, beauty and Zen. Today, it is the most popular destination for citizens to see plum blossoms in downtown Hangzhou.

Traditionally, the plum blossom is the sign of the upcoming spring, and ranks one of ten Chinese traditional flowers, and one of four favorite plants of well-educated people or elites(君子四友, four friends of junzi, comprised of pine, bamboo, plum and orchid). Traditionally, people prefer planting the plums, viewing the plums and writing themed poems to highly praise the valuable aspects of plums such as patience, perseverance and so on. Also, the five petals of the plum are symbolized to be happiness, joy, longevity, success and peace, all of which are the details of Wu Fu(五福, five blessings) in traditional value of China.

Lingfeng Tanmei as a classic scene of West Lake Scenic Area was reopened in 1988 after an obvious reconstruction. In ancient Hangzhou, it was one of three most famous sites to view plum blossoms. In accordance with the historical record, a Buddhist temple named Jiufeng Chansi(鹫峰禅寺)was built in the reign of Wuyue Kingdom, a southeast state in China’s period of Five Dynasties, and up to Northern Song Dynasty, it was imperially changed to be Lingfeng Temple. In late Qing Dynasty, an official named Gu Qing(固庆) was fond of the special surroundings of Lingfeng Peak, and spent a lot resurfacing the temples and also planted hundreds of plums around the temple. Several years later, a plum forest appeared. The details of the history have been engraved onto a stele, which at present is located in Juyue Pavilion(掬月亭). Several years later, the temple and the plum forest was destroyed by warfare. Up to the early period of the 20th century, a scholar named Zhou Qingyun(周庆云) re-traveled Lingfeng and felt considerably pitiful of the declination of the temple. He requested some people to plant roughly 300 plums around the architecture, and additionally built a nunnery named Bumeian(补梅庵, the nunnery of adding plums), and he chose the birthday of Su Dongpo(苏东坡, a great soul in Chinese culture) to organize a party to chant and write themed poems. This is the second planting of plum in history. In 1986, it got the latest rebuilding and extension. By the way, there is another famous tourist destination in Hangzhou to view the plum blossom in winter. It is Chaoshan Scenic Area in Yuhang District, Hangzhou.
