Shuangfeng Chayun(双峰插云, Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds) ranks the eighth site of ten classic scenes of west lake scenic area. One branch of Tianmu Mountain(天目山) Range extended eastwardly and was divided into two parts when faces the West Lake, and they are called respectively the South Peak(南高峰) and North Peak(北高峰). They seem like two warriors standing on the north and south sides of West Lake.
Two peaks are also the excellent site to have a panoramic view of West Lake, and traditionally is the center of Buddhism. In ancient times, South and North Peaks were quite famous for its Buddhist landscape. In autumn period, the mist and fog covers the whole surroundings, and the tip of the pagodas broke through the clouds and partially showed or hidden. It was considered as the paradise of immortals. In Southern Song Dynasty, it had been one of ten classic views of West Lake Scenic Area. How to view its great aspect? In Southern Song Dynasty, viewing on Phoenix Mountain was advised, and in Ming Dynasty, a famous guy named Li Liufang(李流芳) largely promoted to view it on the Wangshan Bridge(望山桥), the third bridge on Su Causeway.
Since Qing Dynasty, the pagodas and architecture were destroyed or struck by lightning, and only the bases were remained. And the sight of piercing the clouds was not available any longer until the arrival of Emperor Kangxi, who changed the name to Shuangfeng Chayun from Liangfeng Chayun(两峰插云), and erected the stele in today’s side of Hongchun Bridge on Lingyin Road. North Peak with an altitude of 314 meters is currently a part of Lingyin Temple Scenic Area.
Transportation – taking bus 7, 27, 807, tour bus 1,2,3 to get off at the station of Hongchun Bridge, and then walk approximately 50 meters for arrival.
The typical poem themed with this view include Wang Wei(王洧)’s poem of Southern Song Dynasty (the first one), and Chen Can(陈璨)’s poem of Qing Dynasty(the second one):
浮图对立晓崔巍-Two pagodas stand opposite to show the high peaks
积翠浮空霁蔼迷-The collected blue floats on the sky and the fog strongly covers the world
试向凤凰山上望-I try view the faraway Phoenix Hill
南高天近北烟低-The South Peak as high as the sky while the cloud of North Peak is quite low
