Hangzhou West Lake Museum

The West Lake Museum worldwide known as the only lake-themed museum in China is located in the scenic area of Hangzhou West Lake. Originally located on Gushan (Solitary Hill) Road 26, today’s museum was completely built in 2005 for the preparation of application for world heritage site of West Lake. It is located on Nanshan Road 89, Shangcheng District. Exactly on the south side of West Lake and the south side of King Qian Memorial Temple (a big architectural complex nearby Park One, but it is charged for 15 CNY per person), it is opened free of charge all the year from 8:00 to 20:00.

The whole architectural style is quite modern and fashionable, but absolutely in harmony with the surroundings. The main part of the building is underground, and comprised of two stories. The ground floor is the main and regular exhibition hall to display the history, culture, celebrities, legends, landscapes, and intangible enchantments of West Lake. The second floor is a huge exhibition hall for diverse temporary shows related to the West Lake. As entering the main hall, the traveler will be impressed by a huge model of West Lake Scenic Area, which points out all the scenic spots. Then, turn to right, you can begin your trip and discovery about the history and culture of West Lake in line with the time. From the prehistoric period to the periods of Bai Juyi and Su Dongpo, travelers could know a tradition over here. Systematically, the exhibition is subthemed with six parts - preface hall, the overview of West Lake, the dredging and formation of landscape of West Lake in different eras, the theme-inscribed landscapes of West Lake, culture of West Lake and spiritual home.

West Lake Museum is your first lesson to learn about this famous cultural landscape in the world. Walking along the Nanshan Road as you take a rest with your friends and family members, you may be pleased with the landscapes and architecture on both sides, and there are indeed a lot of historic and cultural heritage sites over there. However, when you get to a square just highlighted with a stone board of name inscription of West Lake Museum, you may be confused by where you are. It is the broad entrance of West Lake Museum.
