The Cultural Landscapes in Ningbo
As an important central city of East China, Ningbo is always having its own charm in history and culture. It is the city with two kinds of regional cultures – Wu and Yue cultures. It is a nationally famous academic center. In history, the Zhedong Academic School, Yaojiang Academic School and Siming Academic School were so authoritative and widely influential. Fenghua Xikou is the hometown of Chiang Kai-shek, a great soul of modern China, and the source of Laughing Buddha
Xikou Scenic Area of Fenghua is a top special cultural travel destination in China as the hometown of Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo, two greatest souls next to Sun Yat-sen in history of The Republic of China. The Xuedou Mountain and Xuedou Temple are highlighted with the Buddhism culture nearby. The township and the former residences of Chiang family remain their original looks. The tourist sites include Wuling Gate, The Path to Mausoleum of Chiang Kai-Shek’s Mother, Yutai Salt Shop, Wenchang Pavilion, Little Western Villa, Fenghao House of Chiang Family, Mohe Hall, Wuling Middle School, Yushu Pavilion, Jinjing Pool, Miaogao Platform, Qianzhao Rock, Jiangjun Nanmu, Sanyin Pool and the site that General Zhang Xueliang under the house arrest and so on.
Xikou is also the famous ashram of Budai Monk(布袋和尚), Cloth Bag Monk, who was said to be the earthly aspect of Laughing Buddha, whose statue is available in today’s Lingyin Temple.
Tianyi Pavilion Library is one of the world’s three oldest family libraries and the oldest library in Asia, and also the oldest private library in China. It was firstly built in 1561. The name of Tianyi Pavilion Library is sourced from Yi Jing Zhu (易经注, literally translated to be the Interpretation of Book of Changes), an academic masterpiece of Zheng Xuan, a great Confucian master in East Han Dynasty, in which the meaning of Tianyi was explained – Tianyi gives birth to water. It means that the name of the library is water to prevent the book from the fire. Moreover, the water in the philosophy of Chinese eight diagrams theory has a color of black, so the roofs of the library are black. In Qing Dynasty, it was one of seven imperial pavilions in China to collect Si Ku Quan Shu(四库全书, Imperial Collection of Four Divisions), the world’s largest composition of books.
Humudu Site excavated in 1973 is a representative pre-historical human living site in Neolithic Ages in southern China. In the site, archeologists discovered the leftover of rice, which bring forward the history of the rice planting in China to 7000 years ago.
Baoguo Temple located in the mountainside of Lingshan Mountain has a history more than 970 years. It is famous for its fabulous architectural complex, the Grand Hall of the Great Sage, was built in 1013 and the oldest and best-preserved timber architecture of North Song Dynasty (960-1127) in southern Yangtze River. It today still keeps its fame of no worms’ bores, no birds’ habitats and no dust remaining. It is the typical representative architecture showing the theory of Yingzao Fashi(营造法式, Treatise on Architectural Methods or State Building Standards) in North Song Dynasty. In history of Chinese architecture, it has a high value of history, art and science. The whole architecture has a fabulous connection between wood brackets and the techniques of
mortise and tenon joint. There is no iron nail used at all in the whole architecture.

Tiantong Temple and Temple of King Asoka are also two famous Buddhist temples in Ningbo. They were both built in Jin Dynasty (265-420). The Temple of King Asoka collects the parietal bone relics of Sakyamuni.
Qingan Guild Hall is the largest Temple of the Queen of Heaven in Zhejiang province. In the meantime, it is also one of seven largest guild halls and eight Temples of the Queen of Heaven in China.
Ningbo also has lots of museums, 30% of which are the privately operated. Ningbo Museum is the largest comprehensive museum and the first-level museum in China. The Museum of Ningbo Confraternity exhibits the achievements of Ningbo famous peoples and their contributions to their hometown. There are also many themed museums like Ningbo Clothing Museum and so on.
The Natural Landscapes in Ningbo
Ningbo is also abundant in the natural landscapes. Hangzhou Bay Sea-Crossing Bridge, Songlan Mountain Seashore Tourist Holiday Resorts, Fenghuang Mountain Theme Park, Siming Mountain National Forest Park are all the famous sites for natural sightseeing. Dongqian Lake is the largest lake of Ningbo, and also the fresh water lake of Zhejiang province, which said to be the retreat site of Fan Li in the period of Spring and Autumn.
The leisure sites in downtown Ningbo also include Zhongshan Square, Moon Lake Park, Sunshine Square, Sun Lake Park, Jiangxia Park, Liang Zhu Culture Park, Yaojiang River Park, Fuming Park and so on. Among them, Zhongshan Square used to be Zhongshan Park of Ningbo built in 1929, is the earliest park in Ningbo.
