Introduction of Downtown Shanghai

 

The downtown area of Shanghai generally consists of 9 districts: Jingan District, Huangpu District, Xuhui District, Changning District, Hongkou District, Yangpu District, Putuo District, Zhabei District and part of Pudong New District. The traditional downtown area covers eight districts except Pudong.

Jingan District (静安区) - Jingan district is named after an old temple titled Jingnan Temple. The district is located in the center of downtown Shanghai with a great advantage of location. It is the only district of Shanghai entirely located in the inner circle. Jingan District is a widely accepted high-grade commercial district and high-quality living zone.   
Huangpu District (黄浦区) - In 1945, there were 30 districts in Shanghai. The first district was named Huangpu District due to bordering on Huangpu River. After Shanghai liberated, the districts were modified several times. In 2000, a new Huangpu district established on the basis of the original Huangpu district and Nanshi District. In 2011, today’s Huangpu district was formed based on the former Huangpu district and Luwan district. The Bund, Xintiandi, East Nanjing Road, Huaihai Middle Road and City God Temple are all located over here. It is the heart of Shanghai.     
Xuhui District (徐汇区) - Xuhui district is located in the southwest part of downtown Shanghai. The north covers several main avenues like Changle Road, Huashan Road, Xingguo Road, West Road of Huaihai Road and Kaixuan Road. It borders on Jingan district and Changning district. On the east, it is close to Huangpu district, and connects Pudong New District with Xupu Bridge. Xujiahui is the center of southwest Shanghai. The diverse high-grade gardens and western villas in the former French Concession are the most typical highlights of Xuhui district. Xuhui district is one of the central districts got a earlier resurfacing in Shanghai.    
Changning District (长宁区) – Changning district is located in the west side of downtown Shanghai with a great advantage of location and traffic. It eastwardly connects Jingan district and southeastwardly connects Xuhui district. In the north, it takes Suzhou River as the border on Putuo district. In the southwest, it is close to Minhang district. In this district, there are four main elevated roads in Shanghia, respectively the inner-ring overhead road, Yanan overhead road, middle ring road and outer ring road. It owns Shanghai’s earliest international community – Gubei, the traditional high-rate residential zone – Xinhua road, the villa zone of Hongqiao, Hongqiao development zone is one of the earliest and the most developed modern business zones. The foreign consulates and global 500 multinationals are mostly located here. It is the hot place that foreigner choose to be the residential zone in Shanghai.      
Hongkou District (虹口区) - Hongkou district is named after Hongkou port. It is located in the northeast Shanghai. In the south, it is opposite to Huangpu district and Pudong new district. In the west, it is connected with Zhabei district. In the east, it is close to Yangpu district, and in the north, it is connected with Baoshan district. Hongkou has a developed economy. Shanghai Hongkou Football Stadium has a comprehensive integrated transportation system, which is the largest transfer center for metros and buses in northeast Shanghai.
Yangpu District (杨浦区) - Yangpu district located in northeast part of downtown Shanghai, is named after the Yangpu port. The southern part along the river used to be the east part of Shanghai Public Concession. Yangpu district owns the longest shoreline, which 15.5 kilometers. The only planned ecological island of Shanghai named Fuxing Island is located in this district. Yangpu is also one of four sub-centers of downtown Shanghai, and has Jiangwan Wujiaochang, which is one of ten top business centers of Shanghai. The famous international zone includes New Jiangwan Town International Community, Dalian Road Headquarters Research & Development Zone and east part of the Bund.   
Putuo District (普陀区) - Putuo district located in the northwest part of downtown Shanghai, is the west business and research zone of Shanghai. In the south, it is close to Changning district and Jingan district. In the east, it is connected with Zhabei district. In the west, it borders on Jiading district. In the north, it is linked to Baoshan district. The important railway hub – Shanghai West Railway Station, is located here. It currently has more than 40 historical and cultural sites.
Zhabei District (闸北区) - Zhabei District is one of the downtown districts of Shanghai though the commercial potential has been continuously undervalued. Facilitated with the Shanghai Railway Station, Zhabei District is famous for its connectivity, which becomes the reason hi-tech and creative industries begin to accumulate in the district. Historically, the district has been highly populated with working class residents. However, due to the shift in the structure of industries and increasing number of immigrants from outside Shanghai, partly due to its reasonable real estate price, the district has become increasingly appealing to city residents.
Pudong New District (浦东新区) - Pudong is the new economic engine of Shanghai, majority of Shanghai modern city landmarks are located in this district. In some way, Pudong represents the whole Shanghai and the 30 years’ achievements of Shanghai in the aspect of economy and reform. In the mind of policymakers, Pudong is actually a typical showcase of China’s great leap in all aspects. So in many videos, news, or publications, the images of Shanghai Pudong is the most popular as the classic representation of modern China. For the sake of politics, Chinese governments or policymakers care about their public or personal profiles very much. Therefore, the governmental promotion is always full of boast, and Pudong is used to their advantages. And in fact, Pudong is truly the representative show of China’s development over the past decades of years.
China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone (上海自贸区) - This is a landmark of China’s second round largest reform and considered as the beginning of China’s big change of finance and trade. As a special business region, Shanghai pilot free trade zone is actually a real international business center, comprised of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Bonded Area, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Bonded Logistics Zone, Yangshan Bonded Port Zone and Shanghai Pudong Airport Integrated Bonded Area.
