In history, the Yangcheng Lake was involved in a story of the traditional Peking Opera, “Sha Jia Bang” (沙家浜, Sha Family’s Creek), where the creek is the birthplace of the legend. This legendary tale was formed in the 1970s. Due to the lack of entertainments in the period, the play became at the time very famous. Today, Sha Jia Bang is also a part of Yangcheng Lake and serves as an important destination of travel, holiday and weekend leisure in Suzhou.|

Sha Jia Bang – A Play of Peking Opera
Sha Jia Bang is also the name of a play of Peking Opera, which was quite popular in 1970s. Sha Jia Bang is one of eight model revolutionary operas in Mao’s time. The origin of Sha Jia Bang was The Kindling in Reeds, which was a play of Hu Opera or Shanghai Opera. In 1963, Beijing Peking Opera Group begun to reedit this play, Chairman Mao renamed it Sha Jia Bang. The team of creation was comprised of Wang Zengqi, Yang Yuming, Xiao Jia and Xue Enhou. The original play was upgraded to be a literary edition.
It tells a story happened in the Anti-Japanese War period. The New-Fourth Army struggled for fighting against the troops of Japan, and one political instructor Guo Jianguang led 18 wounded soldiers to Sha Jia Bang for healing and recovering. But the regional army commander Hu Chuankui and Chief of Staff Diao Deyi of the Loyal Army for National Salvation (忠义救国军) pretended to fight the invading Japanese, and secretly surrendered to Japan. Lady A Qing, an underground Communist Party member, backed on the support of the mass and ingeniously helped the soldiers come back to the troops, and eventually wiped out the enemy here.
